The Forbidden City was memorable for the sheer scale of the place. It was a complex of temples and buildings and many open spaces.

Lama Temple contained a very large gilded statue of Buddha. This is the most important Buddhist temple in Beijing. They of course walk a fine line with the authorities |

On the grounds of a Confucian temple |

You can't see it well in this photo but I had a very long goatee, which looked vaguely Confucian. Except for the fact I was white, young and very tall. Most people would openly stare at me on the streets. |
